A recent peek into Joey Baer’s vlog sparked off some memories from my own experiences.. with drive- throughs. (Joey.. I hope you don’t mind this – even though the topics are somewhat different, the end results are very alike.)
Joey remarked on his experience with a fast food chain at an airport and this prompted me to bring up another issue.. that of drive- throughs.
yeah … drive- throughs.. as in fast food chains..
Usually I know what I want and most of the time I will already have my order written down by the time I skip the evil- speaker (grins) and head straight to the window. As with another blog that touched on this briefly, some responders have comment on the order- taker’s literacy with English. There have been a time or two when I had this problem but they usually hand it over to someone else without a fuss.
However… There have been a few times when I’d driven up to the window, handed in my order only to be told to go back to the speaker and use it.
What do I do?
I looked directly at them with a glint in my eye that tells them not to mess with me and write politely asking to see their manager. That usually gets the job done. 🙂 I’d had one unpleasant encounter with an total idiot who flatly refused to take my order and just kept pointing back to the speaker and it turned out HE was the manager. There was a line of cars piling up behind me and I went into a ‘bitch’ mode and refused to move. Using a final tactile, I told them they will be hearing from my lawyer immediately and was about to drive off when they waved at me, all smiles and even gave me an extra order of fries on the house. *chuckles*
How do YOU deal with it if you ran into this problem? What is your most embarassing situation in that?
Tell all…
til next time…

This has happened to me too…been told to drive around to the back of the line and my order would be ready by then! (yeah, and likely cold, too!) Another time, I was told to come in to pick up my order, but more often it’s a request to pull ahead out of the way and my order would be brought to me.
All considered, there are worse hassles in life and I’m okay (except for the drive around) with most arrangements. Just so long as the wait is not unreasonable and the food is still hot.
Somehow I have always avoided the drive thru window hassle. It isn’t worth it. I park in the parking lot, get out, lock my car, go stand in line 😦 and THEN order. Actually I HATE all fast food joints.
What about the Subway torture and the other ones, that sell “subs”, soup, and so on? You have to walk through a Chinese Water Torture of questions, “mayo? mustard? pickle? meat??, white or yellow cheese, tomato? lettuce?? and so on it goes. By then I have lost my appetite. Please note that I am NOT mentioning the quizical looks I receive when I tell them I have to read lips.
Fast food? Thanks but no thanks. I enjoy my peace and tranquility.
Haha, Lantana, I know exactly what you mean. I never go to Subway because it’s like playing 20 Questions. Easier to go to Mickey D’s and say “gimme a Big Mac.”
What I do is write down what I want…then give the paper to someone in a car behind me and gesture “talk-to-the-speaker-for-me-thanks”.
It works…
Where I live, Subway has a copy of where you can easily check off things that you want on your sandwich, very cool idea! It is so easy, I just check it off and show it to the sandwich maker. McDonalds has menu that you can easily give out a number but when it comes to ordering Happy Meal or Mighty Meal, I have to write it down. Pain in the neck!
Didn’t you know that former Gally student, Mike Bunjer successfully sued the McDonald’s restaurant on New York Ave, NE in Washington, DC – the year of 1996?
Bunjer have been wrongfully manhandled by the McDonald’;security people after he had to get out of his car after the McDonald’s driveway booth refused to serve his order.
Robert L. Mason (RLM)
RLM…. no kidding? seems I have heard about that.. but have forgotten all about it .. wonder if there’s more info about that. Does anyone out there know more? I know which McDonald’s you’re talking about – been there myself a couple of times though I am not a fan of theirs. I usually went to Wendy’s during my Gally days. They were pretty savvy with deafies
Anyone?
Yoo Hoo?
Savvy with deafies??? Who? When? Where? Just curious! I know it is not the Sub line!
Remind me of Hardee I went in. I ordered by my own sign language/voice.. I said “NUMBER 6..Thats what all numbers on the big board for combo meal..so I said Number 6. then Clerk asked me if I want big Roast beef or small Roast Beef..I puzzled so I said Small Roast Beef. Then She said will bring your meal, so I walked and sit, talked with friend, Then the lady bring me the tray, so Sudden I puzzled with my face expression (grouchy)..I said That FOR ME??
She said Yes..I said NONO…I want Number 6, point the Board…Know what She bring me?
6 small Roast Beef !! I laughed..My friend laughed too, He thought “oh boy, you eat all 6 roast beef!! So Funny…Then she walked with 6 roastbeef back, and told the Clerk. She look so embrassed and I didnt realized they charge me more for 6 roast beef, I should have seen the price and tell them but I didnt…think!!
then Nice of Her, She refund me the change.
I shall never forget that..
Cant believe the Fast Food Have the Board with Numbers on it, and they have no common sense!!
I still continue using the Drive In..I have no problem with their Service, They accept my order, There is a sticky on Drive In Window about accept the hearing impaired to go thru drive in. Sometime I write on pad, or use my pager to type on it and show them the Order.
You can use your pager to type and show the orders or to communicate with people in the store.
Welcome to a club, Lantana! I don’t like the fast food resturant either. Ordering food is torturous.
hiya!
you know what i do?
well, first of all, we’re creatures of habit. so, when we order, we tend to order the same stuff at particular places. so, in my sidekick, i just have the same order listed in my notes section. if there has been no problems with the orders, i’ll leave my orders in the note. if there have been problems, i’ll revise.
but, keep in mind that people are going to make mistakes every now and then. so, i just tell people to bear it and put on a smile.
i have a very busy lifestyle too, and i would always frequently eat on Fastfoods `:,
of course when you dont have time to cook, fastfoods would always be the best option -~~
